Oviedo

“May the Fourth be with you.” Oh, if only! Even Yoda wouldn’t have had enough Force to fix today.

We journeyed 362 miles, from 09:00 to 19:50, for a total of 4 hours of stops (including some culturally significant service station comfort breaks).

Oviedo isn’t even in Cantabria. It is in neighbouring Asturias. Why some itinerary planner thought it wise to go so far to see so little is as mysterious as the Sphinx. Most of the journey was on motorway standard roads (once we’d escaped the mountains), so we were spared the rocks and forests of yesterday.

Oviedo had not a lot going for it. A few nice-enough buildings, a shopping street or two and a fairly standard market. We passed a troupe of performers in local costumes carrying bagpipes. That was a surprise; fortunately they were just walking, not playing.

The highlight of Oviedo was a café which offered the chance to sample lemon cake which we’d seen on sale in so many places. Delicious!

On our return journey we stopped in the small town of Cangas de Onis. It’s a fairly pretty, unremarkable small town with an historic bridge. We drove past this slowly en route to the coach park; it was a little too far away to walk back for a proper look.

Heading back to the hotel, we were comforted by the thought of a decent dinner. Once again, the Force had deserted us. There was a wedding reception at the hotel (not unusual on a Saturday). It appeared the Chef was focussing his talents on servicing that event and had left his work-experience junior commis-chef to deal with us. We didn’t starve but a lot was left to be desired.

Clock today up to experience: check the itinerary on Google Maps before setting out.
