Mayrhofen
A slightly characterless ski centre, where most of the buildings have been “modernised”. Being one of Austria’s leading resorts, prices in the shops and cafés made Norway seem inexpensive! Margaret was looking for a lightweight raincoat. They ranged from €100 to €400. No sale!
Nonetheless, we enjoyed strolling round the town avoiding one very heavy, if brief, downpour. The day’s itinerary meant we were there for just an hour, so it was very pleasant.
Zillertalbahn
We boarded the Ziller Valley Railway for a 75 minute ride through beautiful scenery. The train was steam drawn; windows open, we enjoyed the nostalgia of the unique smokey smell of steam trains wafting into the carriage. We arrived in Flügen where the coach was waiting to take us to our next visit.
Rattenberg
A short drive took us to the (alleged) glass-blowing centre of Austria. It might well have been as there were a large number of outlets selling very good (not quite Murano) quality glass items.
A lovely place to stroll around. We found some amazingly good ice cream and Margaret found her raincoat (similar quality to Mayrhofen) in a sale for €20!!
