After breakfast, at 08:30 we set off for Sarlat-la-Canèda in warm, sunny weather. Market day. The town was bustling with market stalls along almost every street. It was so pleasant, Sarlat became a two café town; at one they served the most incredible raspberry sorbet, a good thing on a warm day.
By the time we reached Beynac-et-Cazenac the day had clouded over. We were parked alongside the Dordogne river and, miles above us (it seemed) was the village - another to claim the “most beautiful” accolade. We took a good look at the route up and in the interests of cardiac health decided to find a café (quelle suprise). The riverside view passed away the hour, although part way through, the rain started gently at first, increasing soon after, causing a tactical retreat to covered seating.
Just outside Rocamadour is the village of Martel where we stopped for a brief look-see. It had to be brief - the rain was now of biblical proportions. A shame, really - it could have risked the “most beautiful” claim and been in with a shout.
Margaret stayed on the coach, I donned my new rainwear, opened an umbrella and set off to take a few photographs.
Back at the hotel for 17:00, to look forward to our final hotel dinner, which was as good as all before it. North to Paris tomorrow.
