Another identical breakfast kicked off the day. The weather began a little damp and misty but became mostly sunny by 11:00
Around 08:30 we set off for Cahors (hometown to the wine I’ve been enjoying) around an hour away. The old town is exactly that - old. Narrow streets with nothing much to commend them, except an indoor produce market. Just outside the market we found a pavement café (standard operating practice these days!)
Margaret had been desperate to find a good pain-au-raisins. We enquired. “Non.” However, the waiter then recommended a nearby bakery and said “it was allowed” to buy one there and eat it at the table. It was excellent. (What’s happened to France? People are being helpful!)
Cahors new town is much more interesting although with nothing especially noteworthy to be seen.
Our coach was parked alongside the River Lot, spanned by a beautiful bridge. It’s also 15 minutes from everywhere else. We all returned on time, except one passenger. She arrived back 45 minutes late. No explanation was shared with everyone else. She had walking difficulties or, perhaps, and easy to do, she may have become lost.
Another hour’s drive took us to St Cirq Lapopie. Whilst claiming to be France’s most beautiful village (not sure about that), it is unquestionably one of the steepest! We were dropped off at a bus stop at the top of the village.
All the buildings are medieval and good to look around, but everything except a central square is on a slope. Having explored ourselves to near exhaustion, we spotted a pavement café (no surprises there!). A round of drinks and one of the best hotdogs ever, made for a late lunch.
Returning to our bus stop meeting place we were told that we’d have to stroll back to bus park as we had to return by a different route (narrow roads and bridges apparently).
Stroll!!?? We embarked on a 15 minute uphill forest hike on what was alleged to be a footpath.
On our return to Rocamadour at 17:40, we revisited the shop where I’d bought my raincoat as we remembered they had sheepskin ponchos our 3 year old granddaughter would love.
Time for another delicious evening meal.
