An extremely busy day today. A journey of 153 miles and around 10.5 hours; departing 08:30, back 19:00.
We must have encountered every sort of scenic spectacle Norway has to offer:
- Forest covered mountains
- Wide, flat plateaux or valley floors
- Narrow gorges squeezed between mountains
- High rocky scrublands littered with boulders
- Fast flowing rivers and waterfalls
- Fjords
- Road Tunnels (including the World’s longest - 24.5km)
- During the day we used road-ferries across Sognefjord twice.
- Visited the Glacier Museum and then drove on to a viewing point (up close).
- Spent 30 minutes “only in Norway” roadworks stop. They were working on a near single track road alongside the fjord. No room for traffic and machinery, so they close the road in both directions for an hour, then let the traffic though, one direction at a time (having parked the machinery), then close the road for another hour… repeat.
- Viewed the Stave Church (12th Century, all wood, still in use). Couldn’t go inside because, delayed by the roadworks, we arrived 20 minutes too late, and no flexibility was possible.
- Travelled through numerous long road tunnels, including 19 minutes transiting the world’s longest (24.5km).
- Frequent photo-stops (including one inside the 24.5km tunnel!!!)
A very busy day, but with so much to see and experience, it was worth the effort.
