Corfu (Ionian Islands) Greece

Wednesday, 2 November 2022

Another warm (maybe hot) sunny day and another excellent excursion with (we can’t believe it!) another first class guide.

Our 7 hour tour first took us to a beautiful monastery, almost overshadowed by the views from its grounds.

We then travelled up a mountainside to a place accurately called “Bella Vista” with views across the other Ionian Islands. A bit foggy, but still incredible. The drive there had its own excitement. In one small village, if the coach had 6 inches clearance either side, it’s an over-estimate. And the road wasn’t even straight. Apparently only local drivers use this route. Summertime “temps” are required to use an alternative (longer) road.

We had lunch in a small town where we were served what was claimed (and actually seemed) to be authentic Corfu/Ionian dishes with local wine. The food was delicious (I’m not saying too much about the wine).

We drove back to port via some more hills and then along the coast road. We passed what looked like a bay with another town on the other side. It was a town, but it was in Albania. Apparently the distance between Greece (EU Member) and Albania (near 3rd World ex-Soviet republic) around 2nm (1.85km). Last time we were here I’d wondered why there were frequent boats going to Albania. Why? It’s 45 minutes away!!!! We were told visitor visas are easy to obtain. I’ll wager there are quite a few “overstays” on the Greek side!.

Another really enjoyable day. We’re leaving Greece this evening for Montenegro.
